Meet the Team – Iain Warner

Iain is a Senior Marine Consultant based in the Southampton Office. Read more about Iain, his significant GIS expertise, and what led him to join the company 9 years ago, in the profile below.

Areas of expertise:

At MarineSpace I lead the company’s GIS provision, working across all the sectors MarineSpace supports. I also provide consultancy across areas such as project scoping, EIA, seabed monitoring, and marine licence management. Before joining MarineSpace I worked at Hampshire County Council, working in its coastal team, with a particular focus on climate change adaptation. Prior to that, I worked with Cemex UK Marine as a GIS and licence manager.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I like being involved in a variety of projects, covering various sectors. I enjoy learning the nuances of different projects and identifying and mitigating potential impacts to the marine environment.

What do you look forward to whilst at MarineSpace?

When projects are won, as part of the GIS and spatial management team, I enjoy identifying the project’s data gaps, and working out how these gaps can be filled by investigating and discovering new datasets. I also enjoy interacting with the team, as everyone is lovely, and there is good camaraderie.

What led you to a career in marine science?

From a young age I was always interested in the planet, and have always loved being around the coast. Through my studies at University, I realised that I wanted to work in the marine environment. I also remember always being interested in maps and cartography, so upon reflection it makes sense that I do what I do!

Hobbies outside of work:

I love being outside, and am lucky to live in a place where nature is on my doorstep, so I try to get out and about as much as possible. Previously I did a lot of running, but now spend time on my bike. I also have a young family so life is very busy, chasing round and making up silly games to play with them.
